Suggest Treatment For Leaky Heart Valve

Hello- after walking a short distance yesterday, my heart rate seemed high, I was out of breath and had a strong achy feeling in my right shoulder.After my heart rate calmed down again, the pain in my shoulder went away.I had a stress test in January with no issues. However they identified a leaky valve (bicuspid something ...) The incident was just a little scary, should o be concerned ? I hate going to the doctor for minor issues.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Based on the given history you seem to be suffering from aortic regurgitation due to leaking of the aortic (bicuspid) valve of the heart that causes blood to flow in the reverse directio from the aorta into the left ventricle. I advise you to consult a cardiologist for further evaluation. You may need the replacement of the leaking aortic valve.

Since this condition can cause heart failure, abnormal heart rhythm and endocarditis (infections the affected bicuspid valve) you need their appropriated treatment.

I also suggest the following:
* Eating a heart-healthy diet
* Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables, low-fat or fat-free dairy products, poultry, fish, and whole grains
* Avoid saturated and trans fat, and excess salt and sugar
* Aim to keep a healthy weight
* Aim to include about 30 minutes of physical activity
* Avoid smoking, alcohol, and stress
* Controlling high blood pressure

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
