Suggest Treatment For Left Wrist Pain And Enlarged Veins While Stretching Arm

After working to clean my back yard, clearing out weeds, wooden boards, and other items, I finally finished after 10 hours of intense labor. Now today is the next day after and I m completely sore which is to be expected. Why I m here though is because my left wrist is very pained, much more than the rest of my body. It hurts to move it, or to twist it in any way. I m thinking it could be a minor sprain or twist of a muscle or the ligament, but that s not what really concerns me. When my hand is below my waist, immediately my veins start to become greatly enlarged, pushing my skin up by an understandably excessive amount. the veins that become bulging as such run from my brachial, and go down the wrist to the radial and up to my knuckles. I know it s due to too much blood flow, but I don t know what s causing it nor how to stop it. I thought to get myself a hand splint or some wrap of the like and just hope to fix the possible twist/sprain and constrict the excessive amount of blood flow to my left arm but I am but a Nursing Student and am not sure if this would be a good answer to my problem or if the problem will even go away. If you have any ideas of how to get me on the right track to fixing the pain and the enlarged veins, I ll be very grateful. I ll put some of my information below this. Age: 18 Height: 5 9 Weight: 131 lbs Ethnicity: Caucasian If you need any other information then tell me and I ll provide.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You are suffering from pain and soreness in the left wrist. When your hand hangs below your waist, it becomes swollen. You are suggested to get clinically examined by an orthopedist, get X-ray done to detect any bone dislocation or fracture. If required you will have to get MRI done to detect any ligament or tendon tear. You will be managed accordingly (with a plaster cast or cotton crepe bandage / arm sling, etc.).

At present you can take the help of an Orthopedic technician, get a crepe bandage done and keep your affected arm on an arm sling so that you feel better and more comfortable. Do not keep it hanging down. The crepe bandage should not be very tight but comfortable so that it does not affect the circulation. You can take NSAIDS, Naproxen or Combiflam, one SOS after food to help reduce pain and inflammation. Keep your arm at rest, avoid stretching it. Get treated at the earliest. Stay away from addictions if any.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
