Suggest Treatment For Leg Cramps And Discomfort In Shin Area After Walking

Hello.. about 3 weeks ago I decided to get back into shape and lose some weight. So i started walking, over the past two weeks, im up to 8 miles a day. 4 in the morning and 4 at night. I did notice at first some leg cramps and discomfort in my shin area. I thought it was just due to being out of shape. So I ignored the discomfort and continued walking. last week I noticed that my right ankle was getting swollen. and my shin started to hurt. yesteday my swelling in my ankle went away, but now my shin area in the lower front of my leg is a little swollen, red and warm. there is some discomfort. Im not sure if I over did it and strained something, or worse i read about blood clots in shins ????

Hello,

You are experiencing leg cramps and discomfort in the shin after walk. You have started walking 8 miles, 4 in the morning and 4 at night to get back in shape. Presently, you are having swelling in and around your ankle. It can be due to fluid retention, water retention due to lymphatic circulation problem, anemia, kidney dysfunction, OA, RA, etc. You should avoid standing or sitting at the same place for a prolonged period of time. Stay active but do not over exert yourself.

You should always put your leg on a pillow when on bed or on a stool when sitting. Discomfort in the shin with little swelling, redness and warmth may be indicative of stress disorder that occurs due to over doing your exercises, walking or running. Stress disorder overworks the tendons, muscles and bone tissue thus causing symptoms that you are experiencing. To get rid of your discomfort you are suggested to warm up before walking or exercising. Wear a proper pair of walking shoes.

Get connected to a Physical therapist do stretch exercises, get massage therapy done to get relief. You can take Combiflam or naproxen, one SOS to get rid of pain, inflammation and discomfort. Give rest to your foot for a couple of days before you re-start walking again. Your symptoms should get reduced. You are suggested to get clinically examined by a GP, get blood workouts, tests and investigations done to detect or rule out blood clot, venous stasis dermatitis, varicose veins, irritant contact dermatitis, cellulitis, etc. You will be treated accordingly.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
