Suggest Treatment For Leg Pain Radiating Down The Calf

OK, I m obese, yet quite active. I suffer from nerve damage (carpal tunnel) rendering my hands numb, tingly and very painful, especially at night. I wear hand braces which do help. My left hip does get quite painful at the end of a strenuous day. Yesterday as I was getting out of the car when my left leg instantly was so painful I couldn t stand on it. If I moved my hips a fraction the pain intensified. Eventually, I was able to use tip toes to move and then it returned to normal. This happened again later with the same result. However, today just lifting my leg to get out of the shower AGAIN the instantaneous excruciating pain. So much I was unable to move at all... It s behind the knee and radiates down the calf... What s up???

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Pain radiating down the leg could be due to pinched nerve. I would no more if I was able to perform a physical exam. I would suggest you go to your primary care provider to get a prescription for a muscle relaxant and pain killer. You may need to get an MRI of your spine and undergo physiotherapy to improve the pain.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pranav Balakrishnan, General & Family Physician
