Suggest Treatment For Liver Cirrhosis

My mother is 92. She recently been diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver for a few months now. In the last 3 days, doesn t matter what I give her to eat (i.e., a sandwich, waffles, oatmeal, toast), she seems not to be able to tolerate it. She s been experiencing cramping mostly .. today, being the worst. To self-help her I ve been giving her Midol for the cramping, but I don t want to continue this on a daily basis. Its not a good idea considering the problem she has with her liver. This afternoon she defecated all over herself through her clothing. My question is .. is this an indication that either her kidneys and/or liver is not able to absorb anything, and I mean anything at all anymore & a sign of liver failure ???

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Cirrhosis is a irreversible liver disorder wherein the liver cells are replaced by fibrous tissue. As a result, most of the vital functions performed by liver is lost leading to appearance of variety of symptoms.
Kindly give her soft easily digestible carbohydrate rich diet and avoid fatty and protein rich diet. She has to be supplemented with multi-vitamins and multi-mineral capsules regularly.
There is no proper treatment for this condition except providing supportive management.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
