Suggest Treatment For Loose Stools With Black Specks In It
I have IBS first off. For the past month I ve had very loose gravelly type stools. I started eating shreaded wheat which helped the consistency but today noticed black flecks in the stool. The stool itself was not black at all however. I did a fecal test and sent it in but wondered what might cause this.
IBS changes the duration of stools remaining in intestine and hence amount of water in stools also varies, hence consistency of stools also varies which may range from loose and watery stools to hard and dry stools. Once in a while black specks in the stools may be normal due to stools remaining more time in intestine and changing the color of stools. However, if it is frequent, then the cause must be looked for. Some times it may be present due to undigested food particles, particularly blueberries. But most of the times it is due to presence of old blood particles present in stool and a lab testing of stools should confirm the presence of blood in such cases.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Satnarain Bansal, General & Family Physician
