Suggest Treatment For Loss Of Attention In Studies Despite Using Daytrana Patch

my teenage son has ADHD, he takes Daytrana 30 mg patches. His grades have dropped this year in school. He gets extremely aggravated and has low self esteem/confidence. We ve had to go up from 15 mg to 30 mg already this year, due to impulsive behavior and not being able to pay attention. He is awesome at sports: football, basketball, and baseball, but here lately he seems less confident and nervous on the field/court. He is struggling in Math and he cant seem to grasp it this year. We went from an A in Math last year to barely passing this year. My father in law doesn t like him to be on meds and doesn t think he needs it. My father in law feels that the meds are making him to sedated and that he isn t doing as well in sports and in school because its to much meds. The reason we ve had to keep going up on his meds is because he couldn t pay attention and stay in his seat during class work. I don t know what to do. I want him to be well rounded; to be good at academics and sports. I want him to succeed. It is so hard to see him struggle and be unhappy .

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI,

It is understandable to concerned since any good parent would hate to see their child struggle in this way.

If the meds are stopped, it may worsen his ability to concentrate which may then cause a further decrease in his grades and consequently further affect his self-image.

It is possible that the particular medication or way of delivery is not working for him and needs to be looked it. It would be best to speak to his psychologist to see what options may suit him best.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
