Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello, I am 69 years old,175 lbs, 5 3 , just retired and feeling great. Today I went to donate blood and they checked my hemoglobin. It tested 10.2, we retested and got 10.6, so I was rejected. Two months ago I tested 12.6. What could be causing this low iron level and what could I do to improve this level? Thanks for your response. Jeanne
Hello, You need to see a doctor and get a colonoscopy if you have not already had one. The most common cause for anemia in women after menopause is some loss of blood in the stool. You may not see this but checking your colon for polyps or other problems is needed. In addition there are other forms of anemia, not just iron deficiency. You need to have blood tests done to determine the type of anemia. Regards
