I m a 68 year old woman, 110 pounds, I ve been ill for over a year started with lower back pain, then had diverticulitis and I was admitted to the hospital for 5 days, it took a long time to recuperate from diverticulitis. My back pain never went away I have stenosis and osteoporosis, I had also 2 infusions of Reclast, as a consequence I m very depressed my doctor prescribed zoloft which I had to stop due to stomach problems due to the medication. Now I have weakness in my arms, legs and nausea and extremely tired specially when I get up in the morning. It takes all morning for those symptoms to stop. I don t know where to go from here. Your advice please.

Hello,

These things like tiredness, weakness are commonly observed at this age. As you mentioned you have osteoporosis and stenosis, lower back pain is likely to be the result of this.

Whenever a patient in this age group comes to me with such symptoms of tiredness and weakness I advise her to focus mainly on dietary intake of nutrients for energy and strength.

For that its best to consult a dietician and get a diet chart prepared, this will definitely improve symptoms.

For lower back pain I would suggest you see a physiotherapist and learn some easy exercises that you can do on daily basis to get some relief from the back pain.

Along with that see a geriatric medicine specialist so that you will get help for the pain management with proper medicines whenever needed.

Also, I would like to mention here about engaging yourself in things that bring happiness to you and try meditation which is one of the best things a person should do irrespective of their age.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
