Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I was just in the ER and was diagnosed with lumbar paraspinal muscle spasms. I was only prescribed Flexeril and told to use a heating pad and take warm baths. When I asked if he could give me something for the pain since my pain is so bad my fiance has to carry me to the bathroom because if i try to stand or walk my pain becomes excuciating, he told me that no OTC or opioid pain medication would work to help me with the pain. I was wondering if he was telling me the truth, I ve had bad lower back spasms in the past from work injuries and I was prescribed strong pain medications in the past.
Paraspinal muscle spasms are very painful and they limit the range of mobility. Treatment options are NSAIDs like tab. Ibuprofen and tab. Naproxen or tab. Aceclofenac for 2 weeks work greatly to reduce the pain. Tab. Flexeril can be taken in combination with the above pain killers. Tab. Chlorzoxazone would also help to relieve your muscle spasms.
You need to rest until your pain reduces. After pain relief you need to go to physical therapy to strengthen your paraspinal muscles. Thus, OTC drugs will help you reduce your pain. You can take them. If you have gastric irritation or to prevent gastric irritation, you can have tab. Pantop before food.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
