Suggest Treatment For Lower Back Pain

I have been suffering from lower back pain for over 10 years and of course people made me feel like I was making it up or making sound worst that it was. I had an MRI this week and I have been told that I have spinal disk protution (sorry about the sp) in the lumbar region and DJD in the same area. My new PCP is already looking for a spinal doctor for me. My question is I ve had this pain for over 10 yrs, nonstop, some days I need a cane, some days I need a walker, so days I can t even get out of my be without help or I have to have the old lady potty next to my bed. I m 43. I was so happy to be proven right I forgot to ask what can I expect my life to be like after treatment? Just something I m going to have to get use to? Will there be some relief? Maybe chronic pain still but not on the level I ve come to expect?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Since your history of chronic pain dates back to 10 years and MRI showing spinal disc protrusion the important point is to consider whether this protrusion is the cause or something else.
The possibilities are as follows:
Fibromyalgia causing fibrosis in muscles and thus causing the pain for the last 10 years,
Inter-vertebral joint arthritis can cause such long standing pain.
Hence I would advise you the following:
Proper clinical examination and correlation with the reports of MRI by an Orthopedic Surgeon and second opinion of a Neurosurgeon to see whether the surgery will help or not.
The management approach has to be a combined one like involving a Physiotherapist.
Psychotherapy as stress and anxiety are most important contributory factors and even aftereffect of long standing disease and pain.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
