Suggest Treatment For Memory Loss And Mood Swing With Anxiety

My mom was diagnosed with anxiety a while back, she seems to forget alot and seems to be unable to follow in conversations. She seems to be on the verge of crying all the time and she lies alot and can't make decisions and when she does she changes her mind. I would like to talk to her about it but I don't want to make her angry. What is going on with her? She's only 50 years old.

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hello Welcome to HCM

She is 50 years old and have symptoms of anxiety. She has chief complaints like anxiety symptoms, forgetfulness, inability to follow conversations, crying episodes, inability to make decisions and stick on them. In a lot of individuals with severe anxiety symptoms of depression are some times seen. Complaints like inability to follow conversations or poor social interaction, crying, poor judgement and inability to decide etc are symptoms of depression. Forgetfulness can also be attributed to depressive pseudo-dementia.

I would advise you to take her to a Psychiatrist for proper treatment. Many medicines like SSRIs, SNRIs are used in depression. Fluoxetine, Paroxetine, Duloxetine etc are good anti anxiety drugs and these drugs also result in improvement in depression.

Psychological treatment in form behaviour therapy and relaxation therapy will also help. Biofeedback is also having good results. Consult a psychiatrist for detailed treatment.

Thanks, hope this helps you.

Addiction Medicine Specialist Dr. Preeti Parakh's  Response
Hi,

It appears that your mother is suffering from a depressive episode. Forgetfulness, excessive crying and indecision, all point towards it. Please take her to a doctor, preferably a psychiatrist, so that the diagnosis can be confirmed and she can be started on medicines. If this is the first time in her life that she is having such symptoms, then her doctor would also like to order some tests to ensure that there is no medical illness that could have caused the change in behavior. Menopause, thyroid hormone imbalance etc are common causes.

Best wishes.
