Suggest Treatment For Memory Problems

I have epilepsy for years, but have not had any for probably 7 years. I have been having problems memory problems. My neuropsychology test didn t come out very well. It seem that all of the medications that I take for my seizures have side effects of cognitive problems. What can I do to help my memory. I am only 40 and shouldn t have the problems that I am having. Is there medications that wont effect my cognitive disorder. I am starting to notice a change in my memory and it makes me afraid of how bad it might get.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

If epilepsy is controlled for these many years, and no repeated fits or status epilepticus is experienced then drugs can be tapered off and stopped after consulting the neurologist. Though many brain supplements can trigger the epilepsy as brain electrical activity if triggered can lead to fits but use of mimentin, ginkobiloba and ginkseng may be discussed with your neurologist. Also using supplements for B12 and folic acid may be helpful. If it recurs or is persistently present, those may cause more damage then epileptic itself so pros and cons must be titrated against each other before making a decision to continue or stop them.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Regards,
