Hi there and thanks for visiting HCM.
Mononucleosis is a nasty viral infection that often hits children and is often a source of anxiety for parents. Mononucleosis causes fever,
sore throat and
swollen lymph nodes , especially in the neck. This does not exclude the occiput. The occipital lymph nodes often swell with throat infections and mono does hit the throat, therefore in your daughter's case, it could very likely be due to the mononucleosis infection.
Mono may also result in some children having runny noses. However, watch out for any temperature spikes, loss of appetite,
nasal congestion and ear symptoms. Do get your daughter's regular doctor to check her over if you are still worried.
Classic mono symptoms also include muscle ache, headache, fatigue,
skin rash and a swollen spleen.
Most children recover from mononucleosis without repercussions.
It will take at least 4 weeks for the swollen lymph nodes and spleen to settle down. Your daughter may have fatigue for up to 3 months. Ensure she has a wholesome diet and lots of rest. Encourage her to rest more if she is very active in sports as the muscle ache can be unsettling.
Take care,
Dr Shabnam
