Suggest Treatment For Mouth Cancer

My father recently had major surgery to remove part of his jaw because of mouth cancer. All the new skin tissue on both the inside and outside of the mouth are still not tight and it looks like a growth of just skin tissue. We thought radiation would shrink it and all the skin would tighten up. the radiation has not done that yet as he is almost done with the radiation. Will the skin ever shrink?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query your father had mouth cancer and he underwent surgery for the same and now undergoing radiotherapy. Well Radiotherapy may be used to cure or shrink early stage cancer, prevent cancer from recurring in another area, and treat symptoms of advanced cancer. Radiation does not reach all parts of the body and only affects cells in and around the cancer. Therefore, radiation therapy is not as useful against cancer that has spread to distant parts of the body. i would suggest you to go for PET scan be done to look for metastasis. If PET scan is within normal limits, there is nothing to worry and symptoms of skin loosening will resolved. You need to stay in touch with your treating doctor to assess improvement.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
