Suggest Treatment For Muscle Shrinking And Weakness Of Polio Affected Leg

hi there. My name is Ronnie and I had polio at the age of 2. I m almost 39 years old now. I used to play, walk normally but in last couple of years my leg got really thin and my heel is going up, it seems shrinking somewhat. Is there any thing I can do to keep it healthy? I can exercise but its getting more and more thin. Please help. Thanks!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I understand your concern. You can consider including protein rich food in your daily diet. Also, it is advisable to consider consulting a physiotherapist for the same. Regarding exercise, do it as per the physiotherapist’s advise. In polio the demyelination of neurons lead to paralysis of muscles of the limb and it affects the movements. Although for the weakness of muscles, protein rich foods along with exercise training under a physiotherapist is suggested.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Manisha Auradkar, General & Family Physician
