Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My mother is 82 years old. Her complaints are nausea several times a week, feeling very tired, her hands shake at times and out of breath after doing simple household tasks. Her labs are good. She has seen a gastro dr, had ekg s, abdominal ultrasound and all is normal. She does have mild COPD for which she uses inhalers. This has been going on over a year. Dr s cannot find anything wrong. They have started her on Lexapro thinking it might be a depression issues since she cares for my dad that has Alzheimer s. Thank you for your time.
Depression is a very likely diagnosis in patients caring for people with chronic condition and might be the cause of the symptoms in the case of your mother.
Lexapro is a very good medication for depression and I would encourage her to continue its use as the doctor has recommended and the regular follow ups as instructed. I would also recommend her to have a TSH test to check her thyroid because the thyroid problems are very common in females especially in elderly women.
Having some basic blood tests like CBC, ERS, creatinine and electrolytes, ALT, AST, glucose and lipids levels and urinalysis might be advisable to make sure all is well.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj,
