Suggest Treatment For Non Displaced Fractured Tibia Plateau

I have a non displaced fractured tibia plateau from 11/20th- a dog running into my leg at full force. My ortho said I didn t need surgery but to use non weight bearing for about 4-6 weeks. I asked him if that meant crutches and he said not unless I thought I needed them. So I limped around and never used crutches. Now it feels no better. A new MRi ( after 12 weeks from injury) he says showed evident fracture still with modest healing. It is still sore and gives out. Should he have told me now or then to use crutches!!?
