I have a non displaced lateral tibia plateau fracture. its been 5 weeks and i m wondering when it will fully heal. I work at UPS and I m a loader so I use my knees a lot. After I saw the Doctor on week 2, he told me no brace and use range of motion for my knee and told me to come back in 4 weeks. when can I start walking again? will I be able to fully do my work again?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Tibia, also called as shin bone is the major weight bearing bone in the body. The fracture of the bone is classified into displaced and undisplaced fracture. In an undisplaced fracture, the broken bone pieces are not separated. In displaced fracture, the broken pieces get separated from the bone. X-ray of the fracture site shows the feature of the bone fracture. Involvement of the nerves cause numbness over the region of supply.

Management of the displaced fracture needs surgery with screws and/or implant. Management of the undisplaced fracture of tibia is by cast or brace with rest without weight bearing. It may take up to to 4 months for recovery. Physical therapy is needed for maintenance the strength and bulk of the muscles. Appropriate diet is also needed.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
