I have chronic rhinitis and am always congested. I also live with very bad allergies in which I take Claritin-D in the day time. This usually does the trick for my runny nose, but the congestion always lingers. I have tried decongestants and nasal sprays, and they do work very temporarily. But I don't like the habit forming aspects and rebound congestion that those come with. I have tried over and over: steam, saline washes and neti pots. I have tried nasal emollients such as Ponaris. But these only help a little.
The worst time is when I sleep (or try to anyway). The membranes lining my nose becoming swollen from inflamed blood vessels and stay that way as soon as I lay down.
I have a clean house, no pets, clean filters, clean sheets, etc. etc...I know the drill. And I'm going to go crazy because I have averaged about four hours of sleep for ten years now.
My doctor always gives me the same advice every time, and its useless. He must think that I'm exaggerating? I thought by now he would have offered a prescription of some sort?
There must be something that I can do/take that will stop this chronic inflammation. This seems to be triggered by everything, any ware, at anytime (I'm cursed!). Do I possibly need surgery of some kind?
