Suggest Treatment For Numbness And Severe Pain In Right Leg After Injury

I had a fall in 2008 and 2009 miscalculating the step on my porch and fell hard on my right leg causing numbness and severe pain. I used a tens machine to stimulate the nerves in my leg and it helped a great deal. I am 68 will be 69 in a couple months and I have been experiencing severe swelling of my upper top of foot and ankle and shin area and I ve iced it to take down the swelling but it doesn t seem to be doing the job. There is always heat in the leg which bothers me with wonder. I mentioned it to my doctor and all he had to say was lose 30 lbs and you won t have the problem. That ticked me off cause he wasn t addressing my concern for this problem and getting to the root of it. I am over weight and the last time the doctor had a test run to see if I was diabetic it came back ok a 5.3 level. So, guess that was ok. I still am concerned about this problem. I can t sit but a half hour at a time or stand no longer than 30 minutes as well. I work a full time job where I stand all 8 hours but I am moving back and forth and keeping active on the job. My energy level has declined some but I am usually very energetic most times. Is there anything that could be done to relive this pain I m having.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

You have two issues to be thought of. The numbness and pain in your right leg some 10 years back after a fall, injuring your leg. I see possibility of vertebral column injury affecting inter-vertebral disc,(spondilytis)in lumber area pressing on the nerve roots coming out of spinal foramina. Such trauma to nerve fibers supplying affected part cause the symptoms you have. Specific treatment after diagnosis would help you. Please consult an orthopedic surgeon.

The weight gain with connected movement limitations need to be investigated. I would suggest Thyroid function tests / pituitary hormone assessment. Low thyroid hormone can cause you the problem and in time supplementation of hormone healing with lifestyle changes would revert your weight-health back. Consult an endocrinologist.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
