Suggest Treatment For Numbness And Tingling Sensation In The Fingers

Hi there - I just started having numbness in two of my fingers. They re my ring finger and pinkie finger on the left hand. They are numb and sort of tingling. A long time ago, I accidentally put my hand through a plate glass window, and I sliced the pad of my pinkie finger. It was reattached by a plastic surgeon (I was young - maybe 10 or so?). The numbness is right there on that pad, but it s also spread to my ring finger, which does not have any damage to it. Should I be concerned? Thanks.

Hi,

Numbness in your two fingers (pinkie and ring finger) in your left hand, can be related to ulnar nerve irritation and compression.

Ulnar nerve travels through the elbow and is responsible for the sensation and the motor impulses to these to fingers, and this is also called "cubital tunnes syndrome".

Overusing the elbow, leaning on your elbow for a long time and elbow swelling may cause compression of the ulnar nerve and give this sensation. In my opinion, is not related to the previous damage that you had.

You should make changes in activities :

-avoid bending of the arm for a long time.
-try to keep your elbow straight at night when you are sleeping.
-take anti-inflammatory medication as Naproxen 500 mg daily, for some weeks to improve swelling around the nerve.
-you can also use a brace and nerve exercises to improve this sensation.

If your symptoms don't improve you should consult a doctor for a physical examination and further treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
