Suggest Treatment For Occasional Depression And Anxiety
Hello, my son suffered a psychotic episode 8 years ago and was put on Lithium which fixed the problem. Since then he has been ok but has had bouts of depression & anxiety. He went off lithium 2 years ago. At present he is having anxiety attacks & is depressed. He is seeing a psychologist at present who suggested a light antidepressant, his GP also recommended this. Is that OK to take if you have had a hypo manic episode 8 years prior
I can understand your concern. It is not uncommon for a patient with prior psychotic disorder to have recurrent episodes of anxiety and depression. As the psychologist and GP both are advising use of it, your son can start taking the medicines.
As he got off medicines for the disorder that happened 8 years ago, he can discontinue this medicine too as and when he feels to live and enjoy his life without help of medicines. Continue the counselling sessions along with medicines so that your son gets conditioned to get off medicines sooner and the recurrence is prevented.
I hope this opinion helps you. Thank you for choosing HCM when you were in doubt. I wish your son feels better soon!
Regards, Dr. Viraj Shah
