Suggest Treatment For Occasional Diarrhea

I have occasional diarrhea. It is usually on the weekend and only in the mornings. As of late I have started to have it a couple of times more a week but it is not a daily thing. I have started changing or eliminating some foods but still seem to have it. Do you have any suggestions?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I would like to ask you:

1. have you noticed whether diarrhea is related to eating or drinking some particular foods like milk or milk products, wheat, barley, etc?
2. Is there any abdominal pain at any time?
3. Are you on any medication?
4. Is there vomiting or nausea?
5. Have you noticed sudden weight loss in yourself?

I would also suggest some tests:

1. Complete Blood Count
2. Stool Tests
3. Thyroid Function test (T3, T4, TSH)
4. Serum Amylase
5. If possible for you then Colonoscopy.

In the meantime, you can take this medication during your diarrheal episodes:

Loperamide 4 mg orally after the first loose stool, then 2 mg orally after each unformed stool until diarrhea is controlled. (maximum 10 mg per day).

Some tips for you: You can help to prevent diarrhea by practicing good hygiene.

Most importantly, wash your hands frequently with soap and water, especially before eating, before preparing food, and after using the bathroom.

Avoid eating undercooked meats, raw seafood, or foods left out for several hours.

If you experience recurrent episodes, try to identify the factors that trigger your symptoms, such as a reaction to medicine or certain foods, and avoid them.

You can also follow the BRAT diet - Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast. The answers to the above questions are crucial in diagnosis. Post the results of the above tests and the answers here in HCM.

We have highly skilled doctors here. They can follow you up and give next round of treatment. Do not worry. You are under good treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
