Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi I went to see my orthopedic surgeon today because of olecranon bursitis that has been present for four weeks sice the last time I saw him. He told me to wear a compression sleeve and ice. It got larger and today he said we can wait some more or have surgery. I have a few nurse friends who said that it should be drained. The Dr, is skeptical about using a needle to drain it because of infection. What would be your advice?
If there is suspicion of infection along with the inflammation then it cannot be drained.
If the swelling is solely due to inflammation of the bursa then drainage of the fluid is recommended. In some cases, it may need be done more than once. In addition, if there is no infection present, corticosteroids can be injected into the joint to speed up healing.
I hope this helps
