Suggest Treatment For Open Wound In A Person With Spina Bifida

I am taking care of my 18 year old daughter that has Spina Bifida, with a VP Shunt and she also has had an open wound since July 2014. We take her a wound care doctor every week, she has ostemyelits(not sure if I spelled that right) in her left foot. She has a biopsy done on it,bone scans and 2 mri s. The wound itself is healing but she still has the osteo infection even though she has been on clindamycin 300mg 3 times a day. Is there anything I can do, to help my daughter from losing her foot? They had mentioned hypebaric treatments but she can t stand to be closed up in small areas. She is 18 but has a mind of a child and can t take care of herself. Her dad and I take care of her.Any information you can give me will help.gi

Hi,

Your daughter has spina bifida with an open would which is healing and she also has osteomyelitis in her left foot for which she is taking clindamycin. Pl note that osteomyelitis is known to linger for a long time and it has a chance for recurrence however I don't see any risk to her leg however it causes lot of discomfort and difficulties. Pl don't worry and take care of the area as much as possible.

I would advise you to get a pus culture and antibiotic sensitivity test done to check the causative organism and also which medicine is effective for it. You may continue clindamycin if its sensitive else you would need to change the antibiotic to the sensitive one. It might take some time but you need not worry too much about it.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
