Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I was told I have osteoarthritis (female 53 yrs)--my sed rate was normal, no RF, and i had an x-ray, but I'm still afraid I have RA as my symptoms are symmetrical--does the x-ray differentiate between the two? My biggest issue is in my hands--my right thumb won't bend-they said triiger thumb. I had a steriod injection a week ago and no relief.
Hello, You have two different problems. One is osteoarthritis and the other is trigger thumb. The answer for your question is yes,Xray can differentiate between osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Presence of small joint pains in hand and early morning stiffness goes in favour of rheumatoid arthritis. Blood investigations like ESR,CRP,RA Factor and HLA-DR4 also helps. As of now, I suggest you to do exercises, quadriceps strengthening exercises if you have knee arthiritis problem
Second, for trigger thumb, if there is no relief with local steroid injection, can go for a minor surgery where release of trigger thumb is done
Hope this helps
