Suggest Treatment For Osteoporosis

I have Parkinson disease and have recently been diagnosed with osteoporosis. Doctor has prescribed alendronate 70 MG. I am 83 years old. After reading the side effects it looks like they might be more problematic than osteoporosis itself. What is your opinion?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
It is hard to say. For the most part alendronate is safe in most people if it is used for 5 years or less. The list of side effects is frightening. This is something that you have to discuss with your doctor and make a decision one way or another. There is no right or wrong answer to this. If you fall and break a bone, the suffering could be awful. Alendronate may help prevent that. You have to decide if the risk is worth the benefits. Hard decision.
Best wishes
