Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Suggest Treatment For Overdose Of Cholesterol Medicine
I have been taking 80 mg. of cholesterol medicine for 11 days by mistake. I was supposed to take 40 mg. Previously I was taking 20 mg. and doubled it, so by habit, I just took 2 additional pills of 40 mg.
1) What would be the complications having done this? My liver was a little inflamed with just the 20 mg. but my doctor told me to continue taking 40 mg but it wasn't that bad of an inflamation.
2) What should I do since I'm overdosed? Should I continue to take 20 mg. for awhile or continue with the 40 mg.?
Hello, Please take the dosage prescribed by your doctor. Call your doctors office and tell them you made this mistake if you feel comfortable doing so as the doctor may want to check your liver enzymes. How are you feeling? Muscles ache? Chest pain? Back pain? Do the whites of your eyes look yellow? If so, definitely do call the doctor.
I have found many problems with drug-drug interactions, drug-nutrient interactions and toxicity from excessive dosing. Patients should never change their medications on their own. Another example, with some blood pressure medications if you stop taking them immediately you could have a rebound attack of high blood pressure that may completely through your heart into problems.
Hope this helps guide you a bit. Thanks for coming to HCM! Kathryn Shattler, MS,RDN
