Suggest Treatment For Pain After Micro Disc Surgeries

Hi, have back issues several years now.micro disc surgeries 2 times considered failed back syndrome both still nerve damage leg back paunL5 and S1 mostly was herniated disc and degenerative disc disease. Newer mi show L4 buldgung suggested fusion with L5 and L5 but with two failed and it going into year 5 or so surgeon not really wanting to give very high prediction of good results. Tried everything. Chiro, pt, several types if shots , trials of spinal cord stimulator, pain pump. Just on meds and pain management now. Last few days back very painful more than the norm have photos seems very swollen mid back above old scars from surgeries . Prob at L4 and L3 . Sent to family member she was very concerned that dr should see. Is that true or just swollen because maybe just sore? Surgeries were few years ago. Mainly just on pain meds now but weird swelling. Should I be concerned?

Hello,

If you are confident enough about swelling of your back at L3 4, you need to check for the following:
1) If there are any signs of inflammation like redness, severe pain on touch, warm to touch
2) If there is any associated fever
3) Any loss of appetite
4) Loss of weight?
5) Any other symptoms

You need to undergo the following tests after consulting a neurologist.
1) Complete blood picture
2) ESR
3) Kidney function tests
4) MRI lumbosacral spine

It's not because of surgeries that happened several years ago. You don't need to panic as every condition of spine is treatable. These are the probable causes of swelling in the lumbosacral spine:
1) Lumbosacral radiculopathy
2) Psoas abscess
3) Neoplasms
4) Pott's spine
Just have your neuro-physician examine you and let the consultation be sooner.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
