Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I took my last Percocet on Friday night 10/17/14. I wasn t taking daily. Off and on for 2 months. was on quite a bit last week after surgery. celebrated 23 yrs of not drinking in Feb 2014 yet I went and got my 24 hr chip from AA last night. I long will I have to detox or withdraw from this horrible pain pill.?
Depends entirely on the total amount taken in a day. If it is under 30 mg a day, I haven't seen anyone have many symptoms EXCEPT HAVING UNTREATED PAIN. Indeed, recent guidelines basically say the same. If it is over 100 mg a day, then the withdrawal will begin hours to up to 3 days after stopping and last up to 2 weeks with the peak being about 3 to 5 days after the symptoms begin. There are several medicines that help the withdrawal symptoms but equivalent pain relief is quite difficult without going back on an equivalently addictive drug. Unless the pain is due to sick nerves (electrical, numb, burning type of pain) typically at the end of an obviously injured nerve OR at the ends of long nerves like in the feet. Then, nerve pills help and are quite safe. These would include anti-epileptics (typically gabapentin) or lidocaine (typically lidocaine or amitryptiline which has lidocaine like effects).
