Suggest Treatment For Pain And Swelling In The Fingertips

I started feeling swelling and pain in my fingertips yesterday, and brushed it off as possibly trimming my nails too short and over trimming the cuticle around my nail bed. Preparing for Thanksgiving, cleaning, cooking, hands in water a lot, the pain got worse and now there is redness around several of my fingertips. I have figured out it is paranychia? I m a 56 year old woman with diabetes and hands in water a lot because I m a skin care therapist and cosmetologist. I had put some vaseline around the tips thinking that might help heal it, but now after reading about these symptoms, I think I m correct in diagnosis. Is there something I can get OTC to help?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Well, there can be many reasons for symptoms you mention in a query like a sign of nerve damage, repetitive stress, injuries, bacterial or viral infections, toxic exposures, and systemic diseases such as diabetes and peripheral neuropathy.

There can be other reasons also like nerve entrapment, carpal tunnel syndrome, ulnar nerve palsy, hormonal imbalances and vitamin deficiencies (vitamin B1. I would suggest you consult an orthopaedic surgeon for a proper examination.

The doctor may order CT scan, ask for certain movements and complete blood tests.

The doctor may prescribe muscle relaxants, recommend physical therapy of arm and hand along with stretching exercises and recommend particular stretching exercises.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
