Suggest Treatment For Pain And Swelling In The Knee After An Accident

Banged my up shin about 2 months ago, then just as it was about fully healed I did it again in the same place about a month ago. Today it still reappears to be swollen, it doesn t look like my left knee. If it s bent or if I stand on it too long it begins to ache. The pain resides to the upper right of the knee cap, just left of the knee cap/inner leg. Basically it hurts not sure what else to do other than ice, elevate and try and stay off of it.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Since it appears swollen till date & you are experiencing pain and discomfort if you stand too long, you need to get an X-Ray, CT, MRI done. Get clinically examined by an Orthopedics. Swelling is indicative of fracture / hair line crack or injury / tear of the ligament / tendon, cartilage or patella, etc. You are suggested not to strain your knee or legs unnecessarily. Avoid strenuous exercises for the time being. You can apply pain relieving ointment or sprays for temporary relieve. Take Combiflam (one SOS when needed after food) for relieve from pain. You can wear 'Knee support', it should help you feel better. Do not neglect, neglect will lead to worsening of symptoms, improper healing, visible deformities, limited movement, etc. You will be treated as per your reports of CT. MRI & X-ray.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
