Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My friend has a ruptured ear drum and has a doctor s appointment set up tomorrow. Though, he dived into a lake and when he got out he felt like he was going to pass out. Now his ear feels like it s in a lot of pain with water and something unknown leaking out of it. We believe it got infected, but what should we do in the meantime to help ease the pain?
Your friend is having pain in the ears associated with watery discharge. He has been diagnosed with ruptured ear drum. Ruptured ear drum commonly presents with pain and dizziness. He should take rest and should not scratch or touch the ear. To ease pain he can take Combiflam or Naproxen, one SOS after food or when needed.
He needs a course of oral antibiotics (Doxycyline or Amoxycillin) for faster healing. He should get audiometry test done to assess the degree of eardrum rupture. He will be given a conservative treatment. get clinically examined by an ENT, the ENT may recommend surgery if required.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
