Suggest Treatment For Pain In The Back While Having Spinal Disc Herniation

I have a bulged disc in loser spine and have recently delveoped a condition where Im raising (cinching up) my shoulders. I m aware of this and relax but seem to go right back to being (up-tight) almost immediately. Did some lifting (more than I normally can tolerate) while on vacation when this started about two weeks ago. Very painful lower back and it s as if my upper body is trying to pull away from pain???

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You have a history of herniated disc, since you are presently having pain or swelling, stay at rest & do not do any heavy or strenuous work. You can take Naproxen or Ibuprofen for relieve. Sometimes, when the pain is due to nerve compression, Amitriptyline works effectively. Once you feel better, get out of bed & do regular walking to prevent stiffness of joints.

1. You are suggested to do regular stretch exercises, massage, ice & heat therapy, electrical muscle stimulation, you can take the help of a physiotherapist.
2. If you do not get relieve , visit ER, get physically examined, you may need steroid injection in the space around the spinal nerve affected. You may have to get done X-ray, CT.
3. Sometimes, your treating physician can suggest your surgery if you are not responding to treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
