Suggest Treatment For Pain In The Ribs And Sternum

I have been experiencing some periodic discomfort in the left side of my upper abdominal area over the past 9-10 months that was diagnosed at my last physcial as heart burn and for which Prilosec was prescribed. I tried the full course of Prilosec, but it did not seem to provide any significant change. I also have noticed some tenderness in the area of my upper rib cage on the immediate left side of my sternum. Just in the past 2 days I have had several episodes of rather acute, but brief abdominal pain in the same general area. I have just scheduled a routine physical for next Wednesday with my existing family practice clinic, but wondered in this is something that might need more immediate diagnosis and attention?

Oncologist 's  Response
Hi,

Costochondritis: Causes, symptoms, and treatment. The ribs are connected to the breastbone by tough, protective tissue called cartilage. When this cartilage becomes inflamed, the condition is known as costochondritis or chest wall pain... In many cases, doctors do not know what causes costochondritis.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Monish De, Oncologist
