Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My 13 year old daughter has been experiencing pain in her right wrist whenever she bends/writes for the last 2 months. I took her to her pediatrician who thought it was carpal tunnel and placed her in a brace. After two weeks with no improvement we were sent to a pediatric ortohpaedic doctor who felt it was tentanitis and placed her on inflammatorys as well as continued use of the brace. After 3 weeks with minimal improvement and MRI was ordered. Test results are normal which I am happy about however she is still experiencing pain that limits her academically and prevents her from her favorite activities of baking and sewing. Our next step is physical therapy, but still does not answer the question of what is causing the pain. She is a healthy teenager, her only other medical condition is thygesons keratitis which is managed with eye drops.
It seems like you already are doing the right things to take care of your daughter's wrist. If MRI was normal them her wrist is normal and her pain is caused by carpal tunnel syndrome because that is not visible on MRI. She needs 6-8 weeks time to heal. Notice the movements she is doing repetitive that she needs to avoid for the time of healing.
Use the hand brace only during the night. Continue the anti inflammatory drugs for 2-3 weeks on a regular base to help decrease the inflammation. Use also a local analgesic cream to help the anti inflammatory effect.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Klarida Papaqako, General & Family Physician
