Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have pain at the base of my toes. It is most painful when I take a step. I have type 2 diabetes, although I am no longer on any medication for it, as my blood sugar dropped to normal after a change in diet. My question is, what tests should I have to determine what is causing the pain?
Hi. Sorry to hear about your problem. Its good to know that your blood glucose levels are controlled without medications. Along with dietry changes, a regular exercise and a modest weight reduction (4-7kg) might also help to lower the blood sugar levels and keep you free from medications for a few years. So far as the problem related to the toe, along with a detailed history and examination, xrays, serum uric acid, rheomatoid factor , ESR and CRP may help in making a confirmative diagnosis. In certain condition, specially when there is joint swelling and fluid in the joint cavity then aspiration of the joint fluid and examination for cells and crystals may be required. Ultrasonography of the joint may also be helpful. You may need to consult a rheomatologist/podiatrician/orthopaedic doctor. I hope these lines may adress your quiries. Wishing you the best of health. Regards
