Suggest Treatment For Painful Bump On Heel

Hello. I ve been experiencing pain on the back of my heel. I have developed a large bump there, as well. It is very painful to walk. Icing it and using otc pain relievers don t really help. I try to keep pressure off of the back of my heel by avoiding shoes with backs when possible, but with winter coming, I need to find another plan. Thank you.

Hello,

It sounds like you may have something called a Haglund deformity or retrocalcaneal bursitis.
These conditions are usually seen with people who have had high heels or tight fitting shoes for some time.

In my practice, I would prescribe anti-inflammatory medication and footwear advice. If the problem persisted, I would get an xray of the heel to look for any other abnormalities. This may even need assessment by an MRI, depending on the results of the xray.

All the best.
