Hello,
That extra bone fragment that you have is most likely a heterotopic ossification. Heterotopic ossification is a frequent complication associated with post-traumatic healing in clinical conditions such as fractures and after a surgery. It can cause pain and swelling in that area. The treatment of a non genetic type heterotopic Ossification is
physical therapy to increase range of motion and decrease pain and Surgery if it causes
severe pain or restrictions in your daily life. Surgical intervention is the last resort as there is a chance of recurrence.
Often, if surgery is indicated, medical treatment and
radiation therapy will be done afterward to help prevent regrowth of the bone. A
surgical treatment consist of the resection of the bony tissue. Depending on your surgical procedure , you will be on crutches for 3-4 weeks. A return to regular work and sporting activities may take 6-9 months. It is recommended that a
rehabilitation program should start within the first 24 hours after surgery. This needs to last for 3 weeks to prevent any adhesion.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if i can assist you further.
Take care.
