Suggest Treatment For Painful Malodorous Discharge From Legs

Hi, my Sig. Other has been treated at the VA hospital for 13 years for his legs, It has been diagnosed as "congestive heart failure, edema, pulmonary problems, and obesity, etc. over the years. He is perscribed water pills, (major) potassium and that's it. THe VA really does not want to deal with it, "in my opinion" His legs are grossly disgusting. They weep a lot, have yellow crusty build up, red and black in color. The pain is intense. He sits elevated in a chair 95 % of the day. The odor is unbearable. A & D ointment is applied every day or so and they are wrapped. Can you help, please ???

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

It is possible, since there is an odor that an infection is present. If this is the case then antibiotics would be needed.

Additional cleaning of the infected areas with antiseptic solutions and dressings may also be indicated.

There are other medications that may be added, if needed, to his heart failure medications to help with control.
He may need to consider visiting another doctor for assessment and management.

I hope this helps
