Suggest Treatment For Painful Rib Injury

Hello. My husband injured his ribs six days ago on a ropes course where he ended up smacking into a log. He braced the impact with his leg but his knee/thing slammed up into his ribs. We went to urgent care and the xrays say there's no break. He seems to be in more pain as each day progresses. Is it possible that he could have a bruised organ? He was also nauseous today, a new symptom. Should I be worried or is this the normal healing process for bruised ribs?

Hi, thanks for your query at Healthcare Magic.

I have read your description and try to give some explanation.

This is likely caused bythe event of a collision, that will trigger an inflammatory reaction (inflammation). This inflammation is characterized by pain and bruising. Indeed painful rib can be caused due to various things, such as:
1. Heart disease
2. Lung disease
3. Increased stomach acid
4. Costochondritis (inflammation of the ribs)
5. Muscle injury

Therefore, if there is a history of previous collisions resulting in painful injury, chances are indeed that the collision that causes painful rib. Characteristics of this are pain that can be localized (pointed at 1 point) and more pain if suppressed.
If it's heart disease, the pain can not be localized and can spread to the left arm, left jaw, heartburn or left shoulder blade.

To overcome this, you can take painkillers such as mefenamic acid, diclofenac, and others. If the complaint gets worse, you should check with your orthopedist.

Take care.
