Suggest Treatment For Persistent Constipation In An Elderly Person
68 years old. Facing bowel problem since last 4 years. Constipation followed by very soft / loose stool. 3-5 times stool per day. Gas / mild burning through out the stomach few hrs after meal. losing wt. Regularly takes med for BP , Sugar, cholesterol etc. Antacid / amebiotic med did not improve much.
Thanks for your question on Healthcare Magic. I can understand your concern. Constipation in old age (age more than 60 years) should be investigated thoroughly to rule out internal abdominal pathology. So consult gastroenterologist and get done 1. Clinical examination of abdomen 2. Ultrasound examination of abdomen 3. Lower GI (gastrointestinal) scopy. In old age, malignancy is the likely cause for long standing constipation. So get done all these reports today rule out malignancy. If all these are normal then you will need only lifestyle modifications for constipation. So drink plenty of fluids orally. Drink one glass of warm water at night. Eat curd or yogurt at night. Eat high fiber diet like pulses, vegetables and fruits. Avoid oily and spicy food. Don't worry, he will be alright. Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.
