Suggest Treatment For Persistent Diarrhea

I saw a nurse practitioner yesterday for diarrhea I ve had for 2 weeks following 2 rounds of antibiotics for a tooth abcess. Blood work results just came back and my potassium is low. I can t pick up prescription until tomorrow. Also, I ve been drinking gatorade and now pediolyte. Can one drink too much of those? I m 66yo female with controlled HTN.

Hi,

What are the medicines you are taking for Hypertension?

1. If you are on loop diuretics like furosomide (Lasix) you may have low pottasium values.

2. Few antibiotcis may cause diarrhea. So I need to know the antibiotic prescribed and also the nature of stools (colour/consistency/ duration/ frequency) to say if it is diarrhea or not. It may be normal watery stools.

3. Gatorade and Pediolyte are okay for a normal person, but for you with hypertension, we need to work up on your electrolytes and titrate quantity. You mustn't take too much of electrolyte solutions because they can increase your blood pressure.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Jeevithan Shanmugam
