Suggest Treatment For Persistent Fever In Children Despite Medication
My 4 year old daughter has had a fever for 2 days straight, she woke up without one this morning and now it s back full force. It was 101.8 yesterday and when she woke up this morning without a fever I thought it must have been just a bug but now it is back and she is so uncomfortable, I ve given her children s Motrin and am waiting for it to kick in but should I take her to the hospital? It s the only thing open right now and her doctors office won t be open for 2 days.
The fever due to a viral infection can persists for up to 4 days. You should continue giving her paracetamol as per weight 6th hourly till fever subsides and keep her adequately hydrated. Check for any focus of infection like the throat (red), loose stools, abdominal pain and pain on urination. If there is a focus she should be started on antibiotics immediately. Take full bed rest. If she is continuing to be uncomfortable get a complete blood count, ESR and CRP tests done and if they are abnormal then consult the ER immediately.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Meera Rajeev, Anesthesiologist
