Suggest Treatment For Persistent Pain After Teeth Extraction

My son had his wisdom teeth removed 6 days ago. Overnight (day 5) when he gently brushed his other teeth he loosened one of the blood clots. He has more pain than the previous few days in what I'm assuming is the site of the lost clot. He is on antibiotics and is scheduled for a follow up appointment with the oral surgeon tomorrow. The office is closed today. Should we call in to get advice today? Or just wait until tomorrow for his scheduled appointment. (Unfortunately it's not until late afternoon).

Hi,

Thanks for the query. As per your query in case if he has lost the blood clot then in that case if must have developed into dry socket leading to severe pain. Therefore, if it is the case then a proper medicated dressing has to be placed in the extraction socket to relieve pain as well as reduce infection.

As you cannot reach your dentist right now you can give him painkillers like Ibuprofen or Naproxen for moderate pain and ketorolac or tramadol for severe pain. Do cool compresses over the cheek. Make him do warm saline gargles. Once you can see your dentist get him evaluated and if at all dry socket has occurred he will be given Zinc oxide Eugenol dressing that will be changed every alternate day till healing occurs.

Hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Honey Arora
