Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
After several weeks of sinus cogestion, possibly due to pollen or another cause of allergy, I have lost my sense of taste. I was using an over the counter nasal decongestant to allow me to breathe through my nose, rather than just my mouth. The loss of the sense of taste has continued for several weeks so far. Is this a common occurance, and is the sense of taste likely to return naturally ?
The lost of sense of smell is a usual consequence of sinusitis, allergy and also decongestants usage. It will return back of course as the mucosal linning regenerate.
You can keep your mouth hydrated, use a sugarless gum, stay near a steamy sink and humidify the air in the room to keep mucosal lining hydrated.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Olgeta Xhufka,
General & Family Physician
