Suggest Treatment For Persistent Swelling In The Hand

My hand has been swollen for 3 days the swollen area is outsides of hand and in the joints of my thumb and index finger. I m also experiencing tingling and numbness. I work with my hands and make jewelry so I m very concerned. I also had optic surgery on my ulnar nerve 27 yrs ago. My question to you is should I go to the ER, urgent care, or try a hand/wrist brace. And could this be tetanus? From making jewelry? Any help would be appreciated. I don t have a lot of money to spend at the doctors and hope you can shed some light on this. Thx

Hello,

The swelling on your hand and joints of index finger and thumb is likely due to strenuous use of your hand for your work. It is possible that you are doing a lot of work lately.

Or something you got hit with and it went unnoticed. Chances of it because of tetanus are very less as the organism resides mainly in the soil.

Whenever a patient comes to me with such complaints of swelling and numbness along with history and examination of the swollen area, if required I suggest him to get an X-ray of hand done as well as some other tests.

Also, I advise him to take rest for few days. For you, I suggest you should see a doctor and follow his advice regarding it.

It is important to find out the underlying cause for this so that it can be treated properly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
