Suggest Treatment For Plugged Ears With Sharp Pain At The Edge Of Scalp

Both of my ears feel plugged. I went to the doctor today and she said she saw no fluid and that my ears look both clean and in good shape. I started with only one ear, on Friday, and began to have a second earache (feels plugged), 2 days later. This second earache was accompanied by a sharp pain at the edge of my scalp, where my hair line is, at the bottom, that converted into a migraine. Have a history of recurring ear infections -- not this time. In 2012, an ENT and a neurologist told me I had perfect hearing, an ear infection (at the time), and a vascular loop. I ve been taking antihistmanines and NSAIDs and they aren;t any relief. I have a follow up with an ENT on Thursday. What an I do in the meantime? I ve tried..everything I can.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Since you have a history of ear infections & vascular loop and have been taking antihistamines and NSAIDS. The sharp pain could be due to vascular compression of the cranial nerves. Sometimes it may be associated with numbness (plugged feeling), weakness, or a tingling feeling in the affected area. Neuro-imaging (MRI) is helpful to evaluate and detect the degree of vascular loop syndrome.

The vascular loops left neglected and untreated may cause hearing loss, tinnitus or vertigo. You are suggested to get clinically examined at the earliest, your treating doctor may suggest surgery. However, the other causes of your discomfort may be due to jaw problems or muscle tensions. You may need the help of a Physical therapist.

You may need a comprehensive hearing test (Audiometry test). Your ENT, will examine to rule out infection or wax. You can take combiflam, one SOS when pain for relieve.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
