I was recently diagnosed with Polycythemia Vera. I had one Phleobodomy and will vist my Dr. again next week. I am currently taking one 81 mil asprin a day, drinking a lot of water and a few tea spoons of organic vinegar. If I keep this under control with Meds and a blood draw should I be able to lead a somewhat normal life and what if the life expectancy with this disorder if I keep it under control... Thank You
Hello and welcome to HCM, Polycythemia is a chronic disorder characterized by increased number of red blood cells and increased amount of hemoglobin. The treatment of this condition is primarily focused at keeping the hemoglobin levels under control and preventing complications. Phelebotomy or letting out blood at regular intervals keeps high hemoglobin under check. Major complications of polycythemia are formation of blood clots and hemorrhage. Thus, drugs like aspirin will control formation of clots. The measures that you are taking will help to resolve to relieve the complications. Thus, when under control, you can expect a near normal life expectancy.
